The Forty Thieves are a band of thieves, that, true to their name, consist only of forty members at any given time. Their leader is known as the "King of Thieves".
The Forty Thieves were founded a decade after the Old War, by forty Anatharian men and women. The Delta Fortress, one of Azoth's last bases in Anathar, was used for their den. Generations later, Conleth Dultra was named the new king, after the previous died.

The Forty Thieves work globally, and are often independent, though they may often act as mercenaries if the pay is right, or if they are doing a job for a cause they see as morally right. They often steal items of rare value, or will steal treasure in droves, which earns them the ire of pirates, whose loot is often stolen by them.
The group will usually have 40 members at any given time. If a member dies, they are cremated as part of custom, with their ashes being laid to rest at the lowest level of their fortress, known as the "Hall of Urns". The group often scour the land for replacement members. If the King of Thieves is killed, a new King, from out of the remaining thirty-nine members, is elected in their place.
